How to Canopy Ceilings
This technique is an easy way to add interest to a room that doesn't have crown molding or other architectural elements that divide the walls from the ceiling. By creating a border and color washing the walls below it, it will leave the top portion of your walls and ceiling the same color-creating a canopy effect!
Step 1: Collect Supplies
- measuring tape
- 24" plastic level w/ ruler (having a small and large size will be helpful)
- stencil
- chalk (light colored)
- drop cloth
- ladder
Step 2: Prepare Room
- Paint the entire room-including walls and ceiling-in your chosen color.
- When dry, measure down from the ceiling approximately 14" (depending on the ceiling height, you might want it you be 18 inches.)
- Mark the height around the room using your level and chalk
Step 3: Paint Canopy
- Using your marked lines for reference, paint a cool border. Do anything you like!
- On the walls below the border, wash with a colour wash, glaze or aging glaze
- For added interest, try stenciling an allover pattern on the ceiling and top portion of the walls-but make sure it is subtle in color so it won't be too distracting.
