Need Ideas for black walls
I'm looking for some ideas and inspiration for my dining room.
It is a very formal room, in an older home with heavy mouldings with high ceilings. I wan't to keep the formal look but give it an updated feel as well.
The walls are currently black and I really like them but would like to figure out a treatment for them. I really like the look of the large pattern damask stencil offered here. I'd like the pattern to be subtle in the color shift, but do not know what color will look best on black? The adjoining room has off white walls, the drapes in the dining room are a cream and pale blue 8" stripe taffeta.
Any ideas?.... The stencil is one idea, and need a color, but am open to any other treatments that allows me to keep the black as the background.
thanks!

Black walls! Cool!
Here is one idea-- stencil the walls with a dark gray, for a tonal effect ..add a blue detail once the walls are stenciled. You can either by adding a dot in the middle of the stencil or take a small artist brush, size 6 or 7, and paint blue under selected parts of the grey stencil to add depth to the pattern.
You can finish the room by painting the ceiling the same blue from the curtains in the adjoining room and the trim the same cream as the curtians in the adjoining room.
It soulds like your room can handle some drama with the high ceilings and large mouldings!
I would definitely use a large scale stencil, in a deep grey for a tonal effect.
To add depth and detail use a small artist brush , # 6 or7, and underline selected parts on the stencil in the same blue from the curtains in the adjoining room. To tie it all in I would paint the ceiling the same blue in a flat paint, and the trim the same cream as the curtains in the adjoining room as well.
I would love to see a photo! It soulds like your house can handle the drama given the ceiling height and the mouldings!
This sounds really cool!
I would do a large scale stencil design in a deep grey, so it remains tonal..but would add a blue (the color in the curtains in the adjoining room) accent on the stencil, by underlining select parts of the design with a small artist brush, #6 or7.
THEN paint the ceiling the same blue in flat paint, and paint the trim the same cream from the curtains in the adjoining room too!
post a photo- I would love to see it!
let me ask you this, The main color of the upholstered furniture in the adjoining room and then two parsons chairs at the dining room table is a nuetral mossy brown green color, would that color work in the place of the gray?
I'll have to see if I can find photos to give you a better visual.
I've never stenciled before, is it easy? I'm more concerned with the measuring it out and turning corners and hitting the mouldings in the right spots if that makes sense.
I would definitely use a mossy greyish green, maybe a little deeper than the chairs. Stenciling is easy!!!- You can do it. especially with a large scale stencil. I can help give you more instruction if you'd like, and if you send a swatch of fabric we can direct you in color as well!
Here are some photos, I have not replaced the drapes yet in the dining room though I do have the blue and ivory taffeta ready to have them made. But I don't think the stencil and color combo will look bad even if the existing drapes stay put for a while.
I took a photo from the living room looking back to the dining room and the sofa in the photo pretty much indicates the color of the fabric on the dining room chairs as well.
I really like the damask stencil you have listed here, are the one's listed the only one's available?

OK thanks for posting photos, it is so incredibly helpful!- I have been on spring vacation with my family so I have not been on the site!
I deefinitely would paint the ceiling (Benjamin Moore #1647) latex flat ,the same blue as in the new curtain fabric...it will look great with the old as well.
and you can choose, either a deeper shade of blue than the ceiling (Benjamin Moore #1648) for the stencil or a grey blue (Benjamin moore#1623)
We have a few other large scale stencils, but I think the large damask will look best!
My local paint store is a Benjammin Moore dealer..you can have these colors matched at another paint deealer.
Havefun and send more photos when you are finished!!
THANK YOU! I'm going to benjamin moore asap to check out the colors. Have the painter lined up for the ceiling to be painted and Will be ordering the stencil soon. Thank you for your help.
